Not long after Kate made her statement to the press, Chief Inspector Oligeario Sousa held his own impromptu press conference.
"I want to assure the family and all the people involved that the professionals are doing the best they can," Sousa said. "We have no facts to sustain whether the child is alive or not. We are searching for the child until the moment she appears. We can say nothing more, because we are not magicians. All the authorities involved are doing the best efforts to recover the child."

In the ensuing days, police investigated 350 suspicious incidents and reviewed several hours of surveillance camera footage of possible suspects, but, in the end, they were no closer to locating Madeleine. Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha suggested that a pedophile ring might have kidnapped Madeleine—a theory that has not yet been addressed by local authorities.
On May 12, Madeleine's parents gathered with local villagers at a special mass in Praia da Luz, to celebrate her birthday.

"Today we should be celebrating the fourth birthday of our daughter Madeleine," Gerry announced to those present. "Instead, we have had to remember what a normal, beautiful, vivacious, funny, courageous, and loving little girl that we are missing today.
"I like to think about the effects of Madeleine's abduction from us nine days ago like a tidal wave. The devastation affects everyone we meet here in the resort and has affected this community.
