On April 6, Stephanie instant-messaged Joseph and wrote, "I think IM (I am) gunna [sic] kill myself ... I cant [sic] stop crying what is wrong with me." When he asked her if she was serious, she replied, "I don't talk about killing myself for fun." She told him Jodie was her only friend and said, "Jodie was always saying how we should kill ourselves together."
One week later, on April 14, the day before the girls committed suicide, Stephanie sent Joseph a very disturbing instant message.
"This is the last time you will be talking to me on msn," she wrote. When Joseph suggested he did not believe her she replied, "Well im [sic] not an attention seeker ... Jodie wants to do it with me, its [sic] happening tomorrow ... my life is shit and I dont [sic] want to live it anymore."

Stephanie signed off for a few hours, but when she returned her mood had not changed, and at 8:48 p.m. she bid him final farewell: "So I guess this (is) goodbye forever. Sucks I didn't get to meet u [sic]."
Unfortunately, Joseph had no way of knowing just how serious Stephanie was. When he later learned of what had happened, he was grief stricken. "I experienced a culmination of emotions; shock, anger," he told The Herald Sun. "I was upset because I thought I could have done more."
