Ramirez and Michi's one-year-old baby was also in the car.

Deputies took Martinez, Ramirez and Michi into custody, and turned the baby over to a local child protective services agency.

During initial questioning, Martinez was uncooperative, giving investigators different names and dates of birth, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"He was being less than truthful," the newspaper quoted Storey County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ken Quirk as saying.

While Martinez's behavior might be what was expected of a person suspected of committing several felonies, the alleged victim's behavior struck at least some investigators as unusual.

"She didn't look like someone being held against her will," the News reported that Sgt. Quirk said. "She still wanted to talk to him."

According to Ester's family, she and Martinez have dated for a few years and have lived together on and off. The family said Martinez is the father of the baby Ester is carrying.
