Last Wednesday, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the infant, and determined that she had been born alive, but that she had bled to death from 135 "sharp-force injuries" to her chest.
"She could have walked away and the baby would have been adopted by a family that wanted it," County Attorney Douglas Johnson told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, citing the state's "safe harbor" law, which allows mothers to abandon newborns at any medical facility within 72 hours of birth. "Instead she destroys two lives: her own and the baby's. We don't know what motivated her."

On Thursday, Beecroft was charged with first-degree premeditated murder in Washington County District Court, and ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Her bail was set at $1 million. Afterwards, she was remanded back to the Washington County juvenile detention center. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 27th. If convicted, Beecroft could be sentenced to life in prison.
