Deputy Curtice said the juvenile is related to Ester and is likely her nephew or cousin, but he was not sure which. Asked why the boy would participate in the kidnapping of a family member, Curtice told Crime Library the 15-year-old likely had developed some type of relationship with Martinez.

Others have speculated that Martinez may have coerced the boy into helping him.

Curtice said the 15-year-old has been cooperating with investigators since his arrest. Investigators believe Martinez is somewhere in the San Jose area, the location of his last known address.

"We have a lot of leads to go after," Curtice said. "We've got teams of investigators in Fresno and teams of investigators in San Jose following up on leads."

Family members said Ester and Martinez dated for a few years and have lived together on and off. Last week, Ester split up with Martinez and moved back in with her parents. Martinez is the father of Ester's unborn baby, the family said.
