In the 'About me' section Shaffer showed more wit, "Um...I really love music and this whole doctor thing is really just a job (only temporary) until I get my band together and put out a record. I want to own an island someday, or at least a beach so I can listen to Buffett all day and drink margaritas with my senorita. I play guitar, I also have lots of talents and it would take too long to list them ... and English is not one of them ..."
According to Shaffer's profile, he attended Pickerington High School in Pickerington OH, graduating in 1997. There he'd been captain of the school tennis team. Brian Shaffer then briefly attended the Ohio University branch in Lancaster, OH, before transferring to Ohio State in Columbus. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology from OSU in 2003.

Classmates and friends of Shaffer's had already begun spreading the word in their own web postings, beginning with Alexis Waggoner. She posted the following note on her MySpace.com profile:
For anyone who looks at this profile, please think of Brian. He has been missing since about 2 amSaturday morning, April 1. Look around you, and please on your way out or anywhere, just look around and see if you see anything. A wallet, or keys, or a shoe. I love him with all my heart, and I just want him to come home. Thank you all!
An anonymous blogger writing in a journal with a strongly Christian theme knew of Brian Shaffer's disappearance on April 3rd. The writer also knew about the death of Shaffer's mother Renee in March. The blogger wrote:
Brian Shaffer is missing. I can't imagine what his father is going through right now... just losing his love, his companion a few short weeks ago & now not knowing where to find his son. I grieve for this man & his family ...
In the portion of his MySpace profile for 'General' interests, Brian listed his girlfriend, random road trips, hanging out with his friends, but his final sentence in that section was the following, " ... [D]oing things with my Mom, who was the greatest, most wonderful person in the world."
Then, under 'Heroes,' Shaffer posted, "Me Mum .......... she will always inspire me to do my best and I don't want to let her down ,,,"
At 27, Brian Shaffer was on his way to becoming a doctor, and by most accounts in local media reports he was doing well academically. He was handsome and funny and dating a beautiful young woman.
