WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (Crime Library) — Richard Peter Sciara, 61, was a physician's assistant for 23 years at the Topeka, KS, Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center. Investigators theorize that while Sciara, aka "Master Rick," held this position at a VA hospital, he learned how to castrate a man by watching the surgical procedure. Surgical castration is sometimes performed when a patient has cancer. Men with prostate cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes may benefit from castration which deprives the body of testosterone.

Sciara and two other men — Danny Carroll Reeves, 49, and Michael Mendez, 60 — were involved in an unusual sadomasochistic relationship, living together in Haywood County in the western North Carolina mountains. None of the men have police records.

Sciara is believed to have castrated six men inside what has been described as a dungeon in the house he rented. Allegedly, he used a web site to recruit willing men to become his sex slaves. The castrations are believed to have been voluntary.
