On March 3, Detective Superintendent Peter Woite from the Major Crime Investigation Branch announced that a 48-year-old man and a 17-year old, believed to be the man's son, had been arrested and charged with Carly's death. Australian media outlets have been banned from releasing the identity of the two suspects.
The investigation into the two men began after a witness came forward and reported seeing a car with Victorian registration plates parked near Horseshoe Bay on the night of Carly's murder. Police then matched the vehicle's description to one owned by a Melbourne man who recently had exchanged messages with Carly on the Internet. After several days of surveillance, both men were arrested at a residence in Rosebud West and charged with Carly's murder. Two days later, both suspects consented to extradition from Melbourne to South Australia.

At the epicenter of the investigation is a controversial profile that Carly had on the social networking website MySpace.com that she used to communicate with one of her suspected murderers. Crime Library previously identified that person as "Brandon," a man Carly's friends thought to be in his twenties or thirties.

One of the first images to load on Carly's profile is a picture of a young girl in fishnet stockings, bound and gagged. The adjoining photo shows her holding a syringe against her arm. As you scroll down the page, the images become more graphic. There is bondage, S & M, and even a photo of a crucifix being jammed down a woman's bloody throat with the message "Religion, People always shove it down your throat." Some of Carly's interests are listed as "Drugs, Kink, Sex, Fishnets, Needles, F—ked Up Nurses, Red N Black Frilly Underwear and Watching People Hook Up."
