Couey claimed he was going to let Jessica go, but he got scared. He told detectives he kept her locked in his bedroom closet for three days while police searched for her throughout the neighborhood. Jessica knew people were looking for her, Couey said. He told her about it and she also saw it on television news broadcasts.
He said he fed her and gave her water.
Once when the police knocked on Couey's door he hid in his bedroom and didn't answer.
Couey said he was afraid his sister would kick him out of her trailer if she found out what he'd done. Eventually, Couey realized he couldn't let Jessica go home.
"I went out there one night and dug a hole and put her in it," he said during his taped confession. "I buried her alive."
