DAYTONA BEACH (Crime Library) — Police are holding out little hope that a tip from a local woman will lead them to a suspected serial killer who has been targeting street women in this seaside resort town.
Officially, authorities in Daytona Beach will say little about the woman who contacted local media outlets to claim that she might know the identity of the killer who has struck three times since December. The woman, whose identity is being withheld, reportedly told a local newspaper and a nearby television station that she suspected that her husband might be involved in the killings. She told the media outlets that her estranged husband had admitted to being involved in an unrelated shooting and was, she claimed, diagnosed as a schizophrenic. The woman also reportedly claimed that she had handed over DNA samples from her husband for testing.
Police would not confirm that.
Capt. Brian Skipper, who is heading the police investigation in the string of killings, told Crime Library this morning, "the official response is we have no comment with regards to any contact we may or may not have had with this woman or her ex-husband."
"We will not confirm or deny that we have collected anything from her," Skipper added. "We just have no comment whatsoever."
But at least one source familiar with the police probe said authorities are skeptical about the woman's allegations.
