The Legal Case
Even with a pile of medical evidence implicating Alex and Molly Midyette in their son's death, Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy chose to do nothing. The case dropped from public sight, replaced by another Lacy-inspired fiasco—the arrest of John Mark Karr.
In August, Lacy sent some of her crack staff to Bangkok, Thailand to arrest Karr for the Christmas 1996 murder of 6-year-old Boulder beauty pageant princess JonBenet Ramsey.

Karr's arrest was based on four years of email and telephone conversations he had with a University of Colorado journalism professor. During those conversations, Karr allegedly revealed details about JonBenet's murder that only the killer could have known.
However, the case against Karr began to unravel before his flight from Thailand touched down on U.S. soil. Much of Karr's "secret knowledge" came from the journalism professor himself. Even a casual review of some of the taped phone conversations showed Karr didn't know what he was talking about when it came to JonBenet's murder. Karr also had a solid alibi for his whereabouts the night JonBenet was killed. He was home celebrating Christmas with his family in another state.

Soon after Karr's arrest, a DNA test cleared him of involvement in the JonBenet case.
In early October, Crime Library began publishing a series of articles about the Jason Midyette case and helped focus national media attention on it.
In late October, DA Mary Lacy impaneled a grand jury to investigate the case.
Where some saw the grand jury probe as a sign of progress, others saw it as a potential dodge on Lacy's part.
