During the course of their investigation, police have searched Burns's house in Mesa, another Phoenix suburb that is adjacent to Gilbert, at least twice. According to reports, Burns shared the home with his fiancee, Mandi Elaine Smith, his 22-year-old brother, Daniel Raymond Barnett, and five pit bulls.

Burns's house, in the 2500 block of West Kilarea Avenue, is only a few blocks from the apartment complex where the day after her parents reported her missing, police found Jackie's bullet-riddled, bloody shirt and torn bra, along with her purse, flip-flops, and panties, stuffed inside a trash dumpster.
Jackie's sister has told police that she and Jackie sneaked out of their parents' house Sunday, Jan. 28, so that Jackie could see Burns, whom she had recently met at a gas station. Jackie's sister last saw her with Burns around two o'clock Sunday morning and was supposed to meet back up with her just before five o'clock, but Jackie never showed up.
Jackie's father, David Hartman, said Jackie had never been on a date before and had only recently begun to show an interest in boys.
