Neighbors reported seeing Lessard outside on Saturday around 3 p.m., so he did not immediately take his own life after murdering his daughter. Between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, Lessard took a kitchen steak knife, went into the bedroom he shared with his wife, and stabbed himself on the right side of his groin, severing his femoral artery. Afterwards, he walked out of the room and sat against the wall at the top of the stairs, where he bled to death. While the manner in which he took his own life was not typical for suicide, it did prove to be successful.

Ambien |
Lessard was taking the drug Ambien, generic name zolpidem, which is prescribed on a short-term basis for insomnia. The web site PDRhealth.com, warns "some people using Ambien—especially those taking serotonin-boosting antidepressants—have experienced unusual changes in their thinking and/or behavior. Alert your doctor if you notice a change."
The motivation behind this crime may never be known. Steven Lessard suffered some sort of mental breakdown. Perhaps if he had received counseling sooner, he would not have spiraled down so quickly. According to a spokesperson for Entergy, the company will be reviewing its company policy on such matters. In the mean time, Steven and Kathy's family members are making funeral arrangements.
