Within hours of Kaitlin's disappearance, investigators began to focus their attention on Mark Sterling Lewis, a 39-year-old ex-con, who lives with his wife in a trailer behind the Aydells' home. Lewis, who is related to Kaitlin by marriage, spent two years of a seven-year sentence in prison for theft and aggravated kidnapping.
Sheriff's investigators questioned Lewis about his activities the day Kaitlin disappeared and about what appeared to be fresh scratches on his face.
"He gave conflicting statements and outright lies about his whereabouts, as to his going to work, as to scratch marks he had on his face," said Livingston Parish Sheriff Willie Graves.

Craig Simoneaux, a childhood friend of Lewis's who grew up with him in a town called Head of Island, three miles from French Settlement, told detectives that Lewis visited his home in Head of Island about 5:00 p.m. the day of Kaitlin's disappearance.
Simoneaux told investigators, and later reporters, that Lewis was acting strangely during his brief visit. When Simoneaux approached Lewis's 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck, Lewis slammed the door so Simoneaux couldn't see inside the cab.
