For the last five months, Smith has been on an emotional roller coaster ride. Following the birth of a daughter early last September, her son died just days later in what has been described as a mysterious drug-related death. Before the dirt on his grave could settle, Smith was swept into a much publicized paternity dispute. While Smith claimed the father of her daughter was her lawyer, Howard K. Stern, a former boyfriend, Larry Birkhead, claimed he was the father. A paternity test was set to take place in California; however, Smith had recently postponed it.

After being crowned Playboy Playmate of the Year in 1993, Smith was thrust into the media spotlight. The following year, she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, who Forbes magazine once estimated to be worth over $550 million dollars. Marshall, who died one year later, left the bulk of his estate to Smith. Legal battles over the estate have been ongoing since the time of his death. Recently, Smith starred in her own reality TV series, "The Anna Nicole Show," which was cancelled last year. Also in 2006, she became a spokeswoman for TrimSpa.
One of the big questions on everyone's mind is what will happen to Smith's now 5-month-old daughter Dannielynn. Yesterday, Birkhead's attorney, Debra Opri, told CNN that an emergency hearing in the paternity case has been scheduled for Friday in Los Angeles.
According to Edwina Johnson, chief investigator for the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office, an autopsy will be performed on Smith today.
