Transcript of 1st Court Apperance of Dennis L. Rader

This is a transcript of Dennis L. Rader's appearance in Sedgwick County District Court on March 1, 2005:

Judge Greg Waller: Sir, you are Dennis L. Rader?

Dennis L. Rader: Yes, sir.

Waller: And as I understand it, you live at 6220 Independence in Park City, Kansas. Is that correct?

Rader: That is correct, sir.

Waller: You are 59. Are you married, single or divorced?

Rader: Married.

Waller: And presently are you employed?

Rader: I was employed at the city of Park City as compliance officer.

Waller: All right, sir. There has been a complaint filed. There are a total of 10 counts.

On count one, it is claimed that on or about the 15th day of January, 1974, that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, that being Joseph Otero, maliciously, willfully deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation and or asphyxiation inflicting injuries in which the subject, Joseph Otero, did die on or about Jan. 15, 1974.

In count number two, they claim on that same date you did the same thing to Julie Otero.

In count three, they claim that on or about that same date you did the same thing to Josephine Otero.

In count four, they claim on or about the same date you unlawfully, maliciously, willfully, deliberately with premeditation killed by asphyxiation or strangulation Joseph Otero.

In count number five, it is claimed that on or about the 15th day of April 2004 in the county of Sedgwick in the state of Kansas that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, that being Kathryn Bright, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation and stabbing, inflicting injuries in which the said Kathryn Bright did die on April 4, 1994 — excuse me, 1974.

In count six, it is claimed on or about the 17th day of March, 1977, in the county of Sedgwick, state of Kansas, that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, that being Shirley Vian, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation, inflicting injuries in which the said Shirley Vian did die on March 17, 1977.

In count seven, it is claimed that on or about the eighth day of December, 1977, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you unlawfully killed a human being, Nancy Fox, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation, inflicting injuries in which the said Nancy Fox did die on Dec. 8, 1977

In count eight, it's claimed that on or about 27th day of April, 1985, between that date and the 28th day of April, 1985, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, that being Marine Hedge, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation inflicting injuries in which the said Marine Hedge did die on April 27, 1985.

In count nine, it is claimed that on or about the 16th day of September, 1986, in the county of Sedgwick, state of Kansas, that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, Vicki Wegerle, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation, inflicting injuries in which the said Vicki Wegerle did die on Sept. 16, 1986.

In count 10, it is claimed that on or about the 18th day of January, 1991, between that date and the 19th of January, 1991, in Sedgwick County, Kansas, that you did then and there unlawfully kill a human being, that being Dolores E. Davis, maliciously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation by strangulation, inflicting injuries for which the said Dolores E. Davis did die on Jan 19, 1991.

Do you understand that you're charged with 10 counts of first degree murder?

Rader: Yes, sir.

Waller: All right. I'm going to set this case for 9 o'clock in the morning on March 15th. Bond will be in the amount of $10 million dollars. Based upon your request for a court-appointed lawyer, I'm going to appoint the public defender's office to represent you in this matter. Should the case proceed to sentencing, it will be assigned to Division 5.
